Activating Fonts Do Not Appear in Illustrator

When I activate a font in FontBase while working in Illustrator, the font does not appear without me having to close Illustrator and reload it.

I started having this issue after the latest update to 2.23.1.

I’ve done a complete clean install, and I’m still having the same problem.

This was not the case the last time I had to work, which was about a month or so ago.

I’m on Windows 11, Version 24H2 (Os Build 26100.6584).

Hello @shawnwrites, thank you for your post and welcome to the forum :folded_hands:
Was FontBase update the only thing that changed during this time, or were other things (e.g. OS, Illustrator) updated as well?

Thank you again,

I am having this issue also - after the last illustrator update. In an attempt to fix it, I updated fontbase also and it hasnt fixed it. I need to restart to have the fonts appear.
I use it daily so it only happened since the update on Friday. Windows 11 also.

I am also having this issue after the latest Illustrator update. I need to restart Illustrator for newly activated fonts to appear.Illustrator 29.8.1

Same here. It’s driving my batty. I have to stop, save, and restart multiple times every day. This is a really big deal for me as a designer.

Hello everyone, thank you for your feedback :folded_hands:
Have any of you had any luck with the Illustrator support on this matter?

Thank you again,

Hi. Yes, there was a Fontbase update and Illustrator updated as well.

Thank you for the reply and the additional information @shawnwrites :folded_hands:
For now it seems that something within the updated Illustrator changed that could be the root cause of all this, perhaps font caching (they do this from time to time). Anyway, we’ll keep looking on our side as well, just in case.

Thank you again,

I have the same problem. Illustrator doesn’t recognize the active fonts. When I deactivate an active font, it doesn’t recognize that one either. It gives an error and crashes. There are no issues with the other Adobe applications. What should I do?

Hello Fatih, thakn you for your post and welcome to the forum :folded_hands:
Would you happen to remember when this behaviour started?
If everything was fine before, have there been any changes to the applications between then and now (updates, re-installations etc)?
Have you perhaps already tried re-installing the FontBase plugin to see if that would improve the situation?

Thank you again,

Same problem here, and I’m also on Windows 11 24H2 (OS Build 26100.6584). I use Illustrator on a regular basis, although I don’t need to activate/de-activate fonts quite as often. I’m on version 29.8.1 of Illustrator, which was installed 4 days ago.

I updated FontBase today to 2.23.1 during my troubleshooting of a font I was having trouble activating (although I think that turned out to just be a bad font, and i was able to find a better file). That said, I tested some other fonts that I know are working, and I can confirm that Illustrator’s fonts aren’t populating the changes correctly until I restart Illustrator after a change.

Hello. Thank you.

There is an issue with Illustrator version 29.8.1. I installed the previous version, 29.7.1, and the problem was solved. For now, I’m holding off on the update…

Hello, i’m reporting the same issue since the last illustrator update (29.8.2). I have also updated fontbase to the latest version (2.23.1). When I activate one or more fonts from fontbase i have to restart illustrator to actually see the changes.
Does anyone found a solution during these weeks?
TY

I forgot… I’m a win11 user

same here, it’s frustrating as hell, and also wish they (Adobe) would fix the auto activate fonts function in photoshop, let me decide if i want to activate a font. Especially now that they include gotham, helvetica and fonts most designers already have.

I don’t know whether this issue is caused by Fontbase or Illustrator. It also occurred in Photoshop. I don’t know when it will be resolved, but I hope it will be resolved as soon as possible. Work is progressing very slowly. If you have a solution, please help.

@thecoldestday The only temporary solution seems to be to downgrade illustrator to previous version 29.7.1.

Hurray
2026 v. of Illustrator resolves auto activation, and fonts reaper on activating them manually. So latest Illustrator and Photoshop work, on windows at least, with the 2025 plug-ins

So happy (I can uninstall 2 old versions of Photoshop and 2 of Illustrator - beta versions included)

it seems inDesign plug-in isn’t compatible, so 2 inDesigns for the moment
