[Feature request] Improved support for variable fonts alongside static fonts

My libraries have plenty of variable fonts, and for most of them, I also have the static versions on the side.

Right now, they are quite correctly seen as “duplicates”. However:
– It’s not clear which ones are variable fonts or not. Sometimes the file name or file format is not enough to guess. It would be great to add a little icon or something next to them to differentiate them.
– When activating a family, it’s not clear how it chooses between activating the statics or the variable. Maybe there should be an option to choose which to activate, ideally each time, or at least as a preference.

Of course it would be amazing to have options to preview/manipulate variable axis, but I know that’s much more to ask for. But little improvements management-wise would be great already!

Thank you for your post @nclm
Good suggestions, thank you
Have you already had the chance to check out the Waterfall tab in the Family page? It contains the variable axis manipulation and preview similar to what you’ve mentioned.

Thank you again,

Oops I missed that, thanks very useful!

The two main points remain: having a more visible/consistent way to see which are the variable fonts and how they get activated compared to their sidecar static versions
