Finding and deleting duplicates

Signed up specifically to post my own hopes for an implementation of this in this thread.

Any method for being able to somewhat automatically clean up duplicates (or make them easier to identify for more manual cleanup if not) would absolutely be appreciated.

Recently swapped to this after years of using Suitcase and beyond this as a pain point for my specific needs, it’s been a much better experience, so hats off to the Fontbase team.

Kind of unfortunate there hasn’t been an update for this in the 3 years since it was posted. But nonetheless, i like that it recognizes there’s duplicates - however being able to automatically filter by duplicates so we could easily remove them would make things a billion times easier. Also, instead of just saying “duplicate added” when we’ve added something that’s already there, if it could ask us “this font will be added as a duplicate - do you wish to proceed?” or something so we can realize we have it already and it doesn’t actually need to add it. Sometimes the file we have in our documents is named differently once it imports into fontbase, so it’s hard to figure out what to search for to find it.

Thank you!

I would LOVE this feature please!

sure you do!
total BS.
you do nothing unless forced to.
this post is THREE YEARS OLD (with NO further updates - let alone any actual fix!)
even the simplest and most logical of fixes/enhancements you simply DO NOT DO - EVER.

“Greenlight”! What BS.

I have a solution for deleting duplicates on a laptop (may also work on other systems if you know how to access your files)

In Windows go to:

C: users/(your user name)/FontBase

In the search bar of the Fontbase folder, type the word ‘copy’ and press enter

All the duplicate fonts will show up as (font name)copy or even [font name) copy copy.

Select all these files and delete them.

Then go back to Fontbase and all your fonts will still be there, but the duplicates will be gone.

Hope this helps.

ahh. does this answer my earlier question? do all these mysterious ‘duplicates’ all have generated names of filename (copy), file name (copy) (copy) or similar?

ok. i can understand that, and that is very easy to fix as you have illustrated above.
personally, as i was about to illustrate, once i had an answer to what these duplicates were, which you seem to have provided.

but i would simply use an external, separate Windows app to find (and delete these very easily.

[you could even use a Command Line command to do this eg ‘del (copy) /s /q’ … or something similar]
(this text editor has deleted the asterisks from that command string)

my Windows app of choice for this type of task (and many many others) is AllDups

it would all such files across multiple directories in a flash.

i also see another such app on my Desktop/Start Menu, Duplicate File Fixer. i don’t use it, but it must be useful if i installed it.

Hello @dec, thank you for your post your feedback
Also thank you for all the suggestions and solutions you’ve posted below.
I understand you are upset, but saying there has been to progress whatsoever, and saying that, literally, “even the simplest and most logical of fixes/enhancements you simply DO NOT DO - EVER” - this is just untrue. There are different features in the Greenlight category, and as anyone interested can see from the discussions here on the forum and from the app updates themselves some of them have already been implemented, some not yet. But continue to do what we can given the limitations we are under.
Thank you again,

hi there Phoenix.

thank you for comment and helpful suggestion for that ‘use case’

doesn’t work for me because i apparently have no dups?

and certainly no *(copy) fonts

and my own previous example where i had fonts duplicated in…\Fontbase\FONTS and …\Fontbase.fontbase seems to have magically fixed itself, because when i last looked, all the fonts in…\FONTS had disappeared, and all that seems to go there now are any new fonts. i don’t remember running any dup file app over them, or anything similar, but …

the fact that new fonts seems to added there would indicate that there is still an underlying prob; BUT that may be simply because i am manually adding them there myself.

in any case, my best solution is to use a dedicated separate Dup File Finder app, and i highly recommend an app AllDups for this and most other dup file tasks (for audios and photos, i would also recommend separate specialist apps as well).

i would also recommend a file synch app, Beyond Compare, where you can easily check and compare different directories, eg in my case …\FONTS and ….fontbase.

it also has Filters to filter out or in any file name variants or extensions, and a feature that unpacks all the files in all the subdirectories into a single list for comparison. very handy if you don’t know what sub-directories dup files could be in.

For finding and deleting duplicate files, I recommend using “Duplicate Files Deleter.” This tool offers fast and accurate scanning, supports various file types, and provides detailed analysis and management options for duplicates. It’s compatible with Windows 10 and 11, making it an excellent choice to free up space and enhance your PC’s performance.

Hello everyone:)
Glad to announce that the 2.21.0 update is finally up
We’ve added, among other things, a search filter to single out families that contain duplicate font files.
Hope you find this helpful
Thank you for your support and sorry for the delay,

Hi Yuriy, Can you help me? I cannot understand how the duplicates function works…? If I toggle the ‘Contains duplicates’ button it gives me a list of duplicated fonts - the trouble with this is if I don;t see both the duplicates side by side, I’m not sure which one of the two fonts to delete. Can you either implement the ability to view the duplicates together and at a glance see where each font exists: disk path, collections, tags etc or help me understand the current function.

Hello James, thank you for your post
This can be easily done by opening the Family page (double click on the desired font family or click “View family” which pops up when you hover the pointer over a family).
The Family page will show you all the duplicate paths if they exist. For a quick delete simply right click a duplicate to summon the popup menu, then click “Delete from disk”. But please remember this will delete the actual font file on disk, not just in FontBase.

Hope this helps,
