So I have an odd issue and I’m not even certain if FontBase IS the culprit. I get random notification chimes from Windows 10. It’s the sound you get when you hit the wrong key. It’s not the USB device connected sound.
The reason why I think it’s FB is the computer will be quiet for a while…but it instantly chimes when I open FB. Then it keeps chiming, even when I close FB. I’ve totally uninstalled FB, and it seems quiet for now.
The chime is most consistently activated when I open FontBase. Just not certain it is causing the issue.
Hello James, thank you for your post and welcome to the forum
This is a very odd issue indeed. Don’t think there were any similar reports, at least not that I’m aware of.
Has this ever happened with any other software you ever had on your computer that you can remember?
This has NEVER happened before for me. So what I’m going to try is I reinstalled FontBase and I downloaded Process Monitor. If the chime plays randomly again, I will take a screenshot so we can narrow down what processes are triggering it. The sound that plays is Windows Background.wav.
Thank you for the quick reply
Please let us know if the plan works or not. FontBase doesn’t even remotely touch the chime functionality, so there is definitely something strange happening.
Have you had this issue ever since you started using the app?
No. The app has been great. I’ve only had issues recently. I THOUGHT it was because I had directory error on my NAS (where I keep my fonts). But I repaired that issue and the sound persists.
It’s usually random but I can trigger it by starting FontBase, and stopping FontBase. Using Process Monitor I see these four operations happening each time.
Thank you for the quick update
Hm, there were no recent changes in FontBase, as far as I know, that could’ve caused this change. For now it looks like this has something to do with the OS or the NAS connection
Would it be possible to test if there would any similar sounds if FontBase’s Root folder was set to a folder on a local drive instead?
Thank you for the clarification
Yes, it definitely may be unrelated.
Just for my better understanding - are there any fonts on the NAS drive that FontBase is accessing?
Thank you for the quick confirmation
Would it be possible to check if the chime issue still occurs when FontBase only includes local font files and none from the NAS?
Sorry for not getting back. I wanted to test a few things. I’m leaning towards it being a NAS problem. My NAS had some more issues, I rebooted it, and the Chiming issue hasn’t cropped up in a few days.
I think FontBase triggers the chime because its trying to read the fonts on the NAS and keeps having issues.
Nope. Problem still persists. I keep having taskhostw.exe playing “Windows Background.wav” when I start FontBase up and when I shut it down. Then it bongs a few random times.
This happens even when I deleted all of the folders with fonts from my NAS. It’s a weird bug. I uninstalled FontBase and I’m looking for another solution.
