Inkscape/Affinity/Figma & other apps that won't work with Fontbase

Hi, I’m new to Fontbase, and ‘new again’ to graphic design. I have been a software developer for the last few decades, and haven’t done graphic design since college over 20 years ago.

I found Fontbase as an amazing tool to manage fonts, and to simplify my new graphic design workflow I’m developing for my youtube channel.

I’d love to be able to use a variety of graphics, illustration, and video tools, but Fontbase just doesn’t work for everything.

I have tried to load Fontbase first so that it can ‘pre-cache’ the fonts and then open up the Application later, like Inkscape or Affinity Designer, but that doesn’t seem to work.

Only Applications like Photoshop and Illustrator seem to work ( maybe even Davinci Resolve ), I think these applications tend to ‘watch’ the font folder and update dynamically, but I think they might also tolerate ‘OS file links’ and not require direct access to the file.

I am on Windows 11, and I see this problem on multiple computers in my home. I have not tried this on linux, and I do have a MacOS MBP-M1 but I have not tried it on there.

I have also noticed that ‘watched folders’ break with ‘resilio sync’.

I mention this as, a compatibility mode might be a welcome feature that avoids using ‘symlinks’ or ‘file links’ to virtually point to files and folders. I have a feeling that this technique is not the most compatible method for apps in your primary or secondary workflows.

I’d love it if Fontbase could track my ‘windows default fonts’ and then actually work to install and uninstall the files from the C:/Windows/fonts/ folder by physically putting them in there.

I’m not sure if it’s a permissions issue with the symlinks, or if it’s a virtual vs. actual difference that is affecting the apps, but it definitely makes it impossible to use Fontbase as part of a workflow with anything but Adobe and Davinci products.

Hello again @jdavid and thank you for such a detailed post
You’ve brought up quite a few topics here, some of them previously discussed on this forum, some not as far as I’m aware of. Thank you for that
Some apps, like Figma (one of those other users wrote about previously), do not work well with FontBase due to their internal structure and the way they function, unfortunately. I suspect Inkscape would be in the same category.
When you say “Only Applications like Photoshop and Illustrator seem to work” - do you mean other apps, e.g. the standard MS Office suite, as well? I just want to clarify if this is an issue with the app combo you’re using for your projects or a general issue of some kind with most apps on your machine?
As for Resilio sync - this page in our FAQ might be able to shed some light on what’s going on: Why do I experience issues with network drives?
As for managing system fonts on Windows: FontBase is designed not to mess with Windows’ process in that regard, but possibly creating a separate Greenlight category topic with that in mind, given enough support and interest from the community, would make the idea be considered for development and implementation in the future FontBase updates.
Please let me know if I’ve missed anything

Hi, I’m only Designer (no programming experience) but I’m wondering why such apps like Inkscape or Affinity are not able to use such system information. Many deep in the system installed apps like CorelDraw, several video (filmora …) or slideshow (aquasoft) apps are also able to use fonts from an external font manager (earlier I used Extensis, now for some years Fontbase). I have not already tested Affinity as an alternative to Adobe but had planned it, so I have to wait …

Hello @Matty, thank you for your post
That’s an excellent question I’m afraid only the devs of those applications would be able to answer, since it requires knowing their internal workings and design :pensive:

Hello again @jdavid,
Just tested Affinity Designer 2.0 with FontBase font activation and everything seems to be working like a clock.
Could you please describe the scenario where Affinity Designer was unable to recognise activated fonts?
