OTF font cant be loaded suddenly

Please include the flowing when reporting a bug:

Win 11 rs 22581
FB 2.16.9

Lots of my OTF fonts which i load from a dedicated Root folder suddenly wont load. I get this error “cant not activate font”. These fonts used to load just fine

Screengrab would only show the error card in the bottom left

Perhaps be nice if we could see a log or anything

Hello @rombout, welcome to the forum, thank you for your post and sorry for the delay in replying.
Is there a way to figure out the point in time, at least an approximate one, when this behaviour started?
Was it after a FontBase update, any changes to the operating system, or maybe something else?
Also, when you say load, do you mean activate?
Are the OTF fonts copied to the Root folder, or are they added via a watched folder?
Is either your root or the folders containing the OTF files on a network drive?
Sorry for the number of questions, trying to figure out what and how could have gone wrong.
Thank you again,
Yuriy

Summary

I bumped into again today, sorry for not responding. Noticed these forum posts got in an inbox section i dont check that often.

Well it worked fine before the version stated above. Currently im on 2.18.1 and still get this error.
Fonts are in a root folder under my username on Windows. There i added a folder named FontBase, in there the font folder is added. Other OTF files in that main folder load fine.

Edit
after checking some files. I noticed Windows Font Viewer returns an error.

But FontForge is able to open it just fine. I also get a preview in FontBase

Sorry but i cant seem to add 1 image per time. Kinda NOT user friendly!

Thank you for the detailed additions @rombout
From what you describe, since it’s not only FontBase that has a difficult time with these fonts at the moment (you’ve mentioned Windows Font Viewer as well), it looks more like the reason is within the font files themselves. It doesn’t seem like the update had any influence over this case :pensive:
For now I can’t seem to be able to figure out what can be done on our end to remedy this, I’, sorry :pensive:
Thank you again,
Yuriy

Yeah guess so, they are OTF fonts downloaded from Apple Dev site. I cant find them anymore, wanted to try again. I do still see the others, which work just fine

But i got them loaded at work as well on OSX. Perhaps mine got corrupt, but kinda weird they all went corrupt. Ill check if i can research a bit more
